This branch of critical theory focuses on inequities based on race or ethnicity. It also takes up questions of personal identity in relation to racial or ethnic culture.
Starting questions to ask:
• What is the intersection of race, law, and power within this narrative?
• How free are these characters to follow their dreams?
• How do these characters experience racism?
• How are people of color described in the text?
o Does the author employ stereotypes?
• In what ways does race intersect with socioeconomic challenges? Gender inequalities?
• To what degree does assimilation become a concern for these characters?
o Assimilation: changing certain aspects of personal identity to better conform with the dominant culture
