The purpose of the writing assignment is to allow students the opportunity to explore a historical topic of their own interest. Students may choose any topic related to the historical period covered by this class; however, all topics must be approved by the instructor. Students will write an annotated bibliography, which will include a thesis statement and introduction, followed by an analysis of at least seven academic journal articles. For each article, students will write at least one paragraph (about 150 words) explaining the author’s thesis, main arguments, and the evidence used to support those arguments. Students will also explain how the article relates to their chosen topic. Citations will be formatted according to the Chicago-Turabian manual of style. Papers must be typed in twelve point font and single-spaced with one inch margins all around. The writing assignment will be worth a total of 100 points, which will be broken down into four categories as outlined below.
