TIMELINE: The Design Evolution of an Object
For this assignment you will select a common object to research. The object should be one that you come
in contact with on a daily or habitual basis and be no larger than a volume of 10’x10’x10’ (approx.
3mx3mx3m). Research should be limited to:
• A topic related to that object (i.e. how the design evolution of the water bottle has promoted
various active lifestyles) Would like to do it on a GOLF BALL
Narrow research topics promote depth of information, so be selective in your research proposal. The chair project discussed in class should be used as a guide, but insert your creativity.
Research provided should answer the following questions:
• What is the definition of your object (i.e. how does your object differentiate from other items? For example the chair has four legs and a back, making it different from a stool)?
• Where, when, how and by whom did the object originate?
• Through visual imagery show how the design of the object has evolved over time.
• Through text describe how changes to physical attributes affect use of the object.
Personal Commentary/ Synthesis:
• Synthesis: the combination of ideas to form a theory or system.
• Provide an interpretation of the research with each design evolution. For instance canteens and
leather vessels have evolved into plastic water bottles. How is this beneficial for an active
person’s lifestyle if at all?
