1. Killing Us Softly: reading the media (media literacy) and features of culture and representation.

Consider TV episodes we have watched in class or otherwise: Simpsons, Tech support in India, Shades of Ray, Sarah Brightman, Beyonce/Coldplay, South Korea beauty pageants, etc. (4 pages double-spaced)

A) In terms of cultural features, how is India or Indian culture represented in these episodes? You may also add to the list and provide a reference link to the media. Provide examples. 

B) Analyze representations, messages, depictions/portrayals, stereotypes, biases, and standards expressed through different forms of media. Provide specific examples. Comment on Universal vs. specific. 

2. The Party and Bend it Like Beckham (3 pages, double-spaced)

A) Define and discuss notions of Orientalism in portrayals of South Asia/South Asians in The Party and Bend it Like Beckham that we have watched for this class. Give specific examples for each point. Consider depictions as "different" and argue how it leads to stereotyping and the marginalized "other" in The Party. Consider how Bend it Like Beckham depicts Orientalism notions from within. Provide examples from both to show "clash of cultures" and notion of standard.
