Sexual Addiction

Film: Shame.

Discuss whether a main character in one of these films is (or is not) a “sexual addict.” To back up your claims, you need to read and make specific references to the sexual addiction/compulsion literature and what characterizes a “sexual addict” (e.g., 4 steps of a sexual addiction in chapter 18 of Human Sexuality: a contemporary introduction by Caroline F.Pukall). In addition, you need to give examples of how his or her behaviour does or does not follow the steps of a sexual addiction. Note that, as mentioned above, before you do this critique, you need to review (i.e., summarize) findings from 1 academic article from the sexual addictions literature. So, the first part of your essay will be a mini-review of the literature (some of which may be critical of the sexual addiction model), before the actual discussion of the film. A starting point for your paper can be relevant sections or chapters in an introductory book such as Pukall’s Human Sexuality.
