Policy Brief on Reproductive and Sexual Health in adolescents and Young Adults

Many young people engage in risky behaviors more often sexual behaviors during adolescence and young adulthood that put them at increased risk for HIV infection, STDs, unintended pregnancy, and other adverse health outcomes. Adolescents lack adequate knowledge and experience poor access to comprehensive Sexual and Reproductive Health information that would guide them in making the necessary and appropriate decisions. Reproductive and sexual health is essential to the general health and well-being of humans and profound disparities exist in the united states among different races and social classes affecting some groups more than others and often diminishing quality of life significantly. To decrease sexual risk behaviors among teenagers and young adults, youth-serving organizations and programs should encourage positive young development by employing peer educators, promoting positive attitudes and behaviors that may support reproductive and sexual health as well as trying to eliminate disparities. This brief will discuss the current problems in adolescent reproductive and sexual health, the importance and aim of the necessity to address the issues. Successful public health/education programs will be analyzed and discussed, current policies will be mentioned and proposed alternatives and modifications will be discussed as well as the steps to address the issues.
