Messianic Prophecies in Zechariah 9–14

You are to write a 1200–1500-word essay that will focus on the messianic reading of four passages from Zechariah in the NT:

Zechariah 9:9 in Matthew 21:5
Zechariah 11:12-13 in Matthew 27:9–10
Zechariah 12:10 in John 19:34, 37
Zechariah 13:7 in Matthew 26:31 and Mark 14:27

Part 1: The writers of the Gospels point to several messianic prophecies in Zechariah 9–14. What is the overall context and message of this section of the book of Zechariah and how might this larger context have lead the writers of the New Testament to read this section of the book with a messianic focus? (100 words)

Part 2: Explain the meaning of each of the references from Zechariah and what they mean in their OT context. You will need to do a careful study of each passage and explain each of them in their specific context and setting in the book. Are these passages prophecies of Christ in their OT context—why or why not? (600–700 words)

Part 3: Explain how each of these passages is used in the NT. Assess how the writer has used them. Is the meaning assigned to these passages in the NT consistent with their OT usage? Why or why not? How did these passages specifically point to Christ and how does the NT usage of these passages inform our understanding of how to read the OT “Christologically?”  (400–500 words)
