Literature review - Communication disorders

OVERVIEW

Write a paper in which you review literature related to a communication research problem statement / question. The paper should be 6–9 pages in length. This assignment entails summarizing existing literature and developing an argument that justifies completing new research on the problem question you develop. This paper is worth XXX of your grade.

PAPER STRUCTURE

The following is an example of how the paper should be structured.

Introduction (1–2 paragraphs):

Justify the selection of this topic. (Why is it important?) Provide any necessary context/background, and describe the problem as a statement or a question. Underline your one-sentence problem statement or question. Identify how your literature review is organized according to one of the seven ways in Table 2.2 on p. 35 of your book. This sentence can be as simple as “This literature review is organized topically.” Underline this sentence also. At the end of your introduction, preview the remaining points of the paper.

Review of Literature (4.5–7.5 pages):

The main portion of your paper. Summarize research literature for your topic, conveying how the studies you include relate to and differ from one another. This section of your paper should be organized by subtopics, according to your stated organizational method. Do not just describe/summarize studies, one after the other. You need to synthesize studies together into larger sub-topics. One way to do this right is to make sure each paragraph or set of paragraphs represents a sub-topic.

Future research priorities (1–3 paragraphs):

Assess relevant material that remains unknown about the topic. What is a gap in knowledge about the problem question that could invite new research? Indicate what research should be completed and the reasons why. If you already addressed some knowledge gaps in your lit. review, now is a great time to summarize and elaborate.

Conclusion (1 paragraph):

Summarize your paper. You may include final thoughts on your topic but do not introduce new material.

ARTICLES REQUIREMENTS

Minimum of 15 sources. All articles must be research articles (not editorials or forum pieces) from scholarly, peer-reviewed journals. At least ten must be from recognized CTP/CD journals. Up to five may come from associated journals that are not technically CTP/CD journals but closely affiliated with CTP/CD journals.
