Kant and Lying

217

Answer these two scenarios in a Simple Voice, MLA Format, in two to three paragraphs for each scenario** Can have in-text citation**

Kant & Lying

Kant argues that we have a universal duty to tell the truth at all times because if we lie we are "treating another person as a means" to our own end. But what about this scenario? What if a friend comes to your door seeking refuge from someone who is determined to kill him/her? You give the friend a place to stay. But then the would-be murderer comes to the door and asks if your friend is there. Do you tell the truth? Kant says, "Yes, because we have an absolute duty to tell the truth at all times."  What do you think? Do you think it is permissible to lie in this situation?"  Why? Be certain to show how the categorical imperative functions in order to determine our duty.

Kant & the Death Penalty

Kant argues that the death penalty is required for anyone guilty of murder because justice requires it. He says that a person of "good character" who is guilty of murder and who does not receive the death penalty is punished too much as he is forced to suffer degradation for the remainder of his life. A person who is a "low life" and who does not receive the death penalty is not punished enough.  Do you think Kant's argument is valid and if so why or why not?  Do you think the death penalty should ever be used- why or why not?
