Journal 4 (Summary-Response)

Assignment:

1. For this journal, you have a choice between 2 chapters: Chapter 14 (Rock Music and Cultural Values) or Chapter 15 (Stories of Ethnic Difference).

2. Read all 5 articles in Chapter 14 or 15 (choose one) of Writing in the Disciplines.

3. Study attachments on Summarizing (Bb/Course Materials) as well as the following segments from Chapter 2 and Appendix in Writing in the Disciplines “Write an Informal Response” (pp. 35 – 36), “Summarize” (pp. 48 – 54), and “MLA Documentation Style” (pp. 591 – 602).

4. Study Guidelines for Writing Summary-Response Journals as well as Journal 4 (Summary-Response) Assignment (both available in Bb/Assignments/Journal Assignments).

5. Compose a journal that will contain summaries of all 5 articles (5 summaries a minimum of 150 words each) and a response part (300 words minimum).

Guidelines:

1. Begin the journal by introducing the chapter and stating the common theme (topic) that the 5 articles focus on.

2. Compose 5 summary paragraphs, in which you will summarize each article in at least 150 words. Remember that each summary needs to:

  • begin with a one-sentence summary that includes the following 4 components: author’s name (and qualifications – if available), the title of the article (inserted in quotation marks with all important words capitalized), a verb defining the author’s purpose (e.g., argues, explains, raises awareness, etc.), and overall main idea of the entire piece
  • include important ideas only
  • be balanced and coherent
  • be neutral and objective
  • employ a variety of word choices (see a list of verbs and phrases on pp. 64 – 65).

3. Compose an informal response (300 words minimum), in which you will respond to any article, group of articles, or overall idea(s), issue(s) or theme(s) – anything that generated a passionate reaction from you. (For ideas, see Prompts for Personal Response to the Text on p. 36.)

4. Prepare a Works Cited page where you will list all articles used in the journal by using the MLA style:

  • Because all articles appear in the same anthology (Writing in the Disciplines), use cross reference pattern as explained in “Book Cross-References” on p. 594. Follow the sample and provide a shortened entry for each article – author’s name, title, editors’ last names, and page numbers. Then, provide full bibliographical information for the textbook (anthology). Therefore, the Works Cited page will include 6 entries – 5 articles and 1 anthology (Writing in the Disciplines).
  • As for the overall format of the Works Cited page, remember to arrange entries in alphabetical order, do not number entries, use hanging indentation, and double-space. View sample Works Cited pages (p. 176 & p. 186) to use as examples.

5. Combine all parts of the journal in one document and make sure it is double-spaced.
