East Asia

The executive summary is the first step in completing your final project.

This represents an opportunity for students to conduct preliminary research on available sources.

The final paper must most concern 'modernity,' loosely defined. It must also be centered on “East Asia” from the year 1600 onwards.

Criteria for the final executive summary:

• Two page maximum
  Topical paragraph description
• Five academic sources (three okay for the draft)
  • Maximum of three journal articles
  • Maximum of one source from syllabus
  • Seth/Spence/Gordon do not count
• Notes on each source – explain briefly what each source is and how you intend to incorporate it into your research and writing
• Preliminary thesis statement weaving everything together

The more detailed and sophisticated the executive summary, the better the feedback you will receive at this early stage, which will in turn, lead to a better final product. You are strongly encouraged to provide as much specific detail as possible regarding the time period, geographic area, and phenomenon to be explored.
