Case Analysis: Strategic Management Issues at Samsung

61

Strategic Management Case Analysis

1. Issues – what are the key strategic issues facing the company? (maximum of 3; 1 is fine)

2. Analysis – summarize the most relevant information; should support Recommendations (can be one or all of the analysis types below)

a) Internal

 b) External

c) Competitive

3. Alternatives – propose two alternative courses of action the company could take to address Issues; if possible, state the pros and cons of each

4. Recommendations – make recommendations (1-3) on how the company should change its strategy to resolve the Key Issues; if appropriate, include potential implications (what will likely happen)

Your target audience is the Board and/or senior management. The problem statement and key issues should be compelling and grab the interest of the audience. Be clear, concise and logical in your writing; stay away from opinions (e.g., “I think…”) Did you include references to recent course materials? Relevant context (stock chart, financial table, etc.)?

State the key issues clearly and concisely at the beginning, and make sure you address the target audience – get their interest! (Executives) Bring the issues to a high level – find the cause, not the symptom. All sections should be connected – in particular, Recommendations must tie back to Issues. Everything builds to your Recommendations; avoid extraneous information. Keep Analysis to the facts; find data/info that supports Recommendations. Don’t mix the sections together, e.g., include analysis with issues. Recommendations must be specific and actionable. Keep your text brief – this is an executive summary, and you are presenting to a knowledgeable audience.
