Annotated Bibliography Assessment Overview

56

The Assessment Task

You will prepare an annotated bibliography on the TWO (2) basic science articles and TWO (2) clinical articles from your drug presentation. NOTE: you cannot use review articles, abstracts from conferences, Cochrane reviews, articles from non-peer-reviewed sources; your articles must represent primary research.

This task must be performed individually: you can work with your partner to ensure that you understand the material in the articles but the submitted report must be entirely your own. The UNE guidelines on how to create an annotated bibliography are provided to you in a separate document in the table in the Drug Presentation and Annotated Bibliography tab to give you insight into what is expected. If you are in a team of 3, AMB will assign the 4 articles for you to use from the set that your team presented.

Please note the following additions and/or variations to the UNE guidelines:

• the format for your annotated bibliography is descriptive + evaluative therefore you must give some detail of how this article fits with the topic of your oral presentation, which is an important part of annotated bibliography (anticipate approximately 200 words for descriptive and 100 words for evaluative as per next dot point). Please note that the phrase “your research” in item 4 under Format in the UNE guidelines refers to your drug presentation – you must indicate how each journal article supported, reinforced, extended, explained or even contradicted the information outlined in your drug presentation. Do not just re-word the abstract as this will result in a mark of 0 for each annotated bibliography for which you have taken this approach.

• the annotated bibliography for each article has a length of 300 words (i.e. you will have 4 annotated bibliographies of 300 words each). The bibliographies for each article must appear in a single document (i.e. do not provide a separate annotated bibliography document for each article) – that said, each must start on a new page. Your word count must appear at the start of each annotated bibliography, just after the full citation for the article.

• when writing your annotated bibliography don’t use statements such as: this is a peer reviewed journal so it must be correct. This might seem like an obvious point but it is a common error. Your role is to evaluate whether the claims of the authors match what they did for their assay(s). For example, if the authors measured mRNA but they draw conclusions about the amount of protein expressed, this is a serious concern because they didn’t measure protein, they measured mRNA and therefore their conclusions are suspect.

• referencing format must conform to that outlined in the Drug Presentation guidelines. This means a modified Harvard format, not APA

- 20% of the value of this assessment item will be deducted if the format does not match the guidelines o that said, you must organise your annotated bibliography in alphabetical order, as per the UNE guidelines.

• formatting of your document must follow the following requirements: o you must have a cover page that has the following information:

- your name, unit code and name, title of assignment, my name as Unit Coordinator, due date o minimum font size is 12pt Times New Roman (note that 12pt Times New Roman is slightly smaller than 12pt Arial, for example)

- entire document must be double-space o in the interest of space, margins must be 1cm all around with a 0.5cm header/footer o your surname and page number must appear in the header, right justified in 9pt font and Italics and a single line of spacing should appear after this information in the header to keep it separate and distinct from the main body of the text

- if you are unsure of what that looks like, look at any guideline document or workbook I have provided that is more than 1 page long.

• a PDF copy of each journal article must be submitted along with the annotated bibliography
