You are walking along a deserted street late at night. You are startled when you hear a strange sound behind you. You quickly turn your head to see what caused it. You see a flash of something moving in the shadows. Your heart starts beating faster and you notice that you have goosebumps on the skin of your arms. You decide that you may be in danger and decide to run quickly away from the area.
You will need to discuss each of the following components separately:
1. Sensory input and processing of startling sound
2. Motor output to muscles that turn your head
3. Sensory input and processing of the visual image
4. Motor output to increase heart rate
5. Motor output to produce goosebumps on the skin
6. Awareness of danger and need to take action
The type of information you will need to provide in your discussions will include:
1. Location/type of receptor involved with sensory input or the effector involved with motor output
2. The location where the sensory pathway enters the CNS or the motor pathway leaves the CNS
3. The major regions of the brain that the sensory or motor pathway passes thru as it travels towards its destination (eg. medulla oblongata, pons, midbrain, thamalus, hypothalamus, cerebrum)
4. The location on the cerebral cortex where sensory input is perceived or motor output is initiated
5. The locations on the cerebral cortex where sensory input is further processed for understanding and decision-making
6. Specific cranial nerves involved in scenarios where the input/output is directly via the brain
7. Each point along the sensory and motor pathways where synapses occur between neurons
8. Locations where sensory and motor signals cross over to the other side of the CNS
9. Which division of the autonomic nervous system is involved in motor output, where appropriate
Each of the 6 components must be discussed separately in its own paragraph.
