A Curated Exhibition project
Background: Museum curators throughout the world are responsible for collecting art specific to their field of study and interest. These arts professionals often curate, or arrange, gallery exhibitions to present their chosen selections. The exhibits are arranged by theme, time-period, nationality, or they can simply showcase the work of one artist. In a museum or gallery, artworks shown in the same room or location are usually tied together by a common “thread.”
Objective: Students are required to act as curator and complete a 5-6 page paper that serves as a proposal for your very own curated exhibition. Students will choose a theme or art period and select 4-5 works that they would like “shown” in their imaginary exhibit. Perhaps you are interested in Surrealism, Expressionism, or Conceptualism. Maybe you prefer artwork that focuses on themes such as war, peace, religion, love, sex, color, or an emotional state. Alternatively, you may elect to discuss the oeuvre (body of work) of one, singular artist. Please be sure to showcase the breadth of their career by including an early and late career work. To help with your selection process, all students are required to participate in the ongoing discussion board devoted to the Curated Exhibition project. Here, you will share ideas and support one another with research, found links, and advice. The rules of intellectual property and plagiarism will be enforced so please be respectful and honest.
Assignment: 5-6 pages. Typed, 11 pt. font
Select your thread. Choose 4-5 applicable artworks based on theme, art period, or artist. Select an imaginary venue. Discuss the following: • Who is the artist of each piece? What is the medium/media? When was it created? • What was the socio-political climate at the time these works were created? (Context?) • What are some researched meanings of the selected artworks? (Content?) • How do these works enforce your theme? How are the works related to each other?
Your text + 3 more valid sources are required. The additional sources may be a combination of texts, online articles, and museum websites. No Wikipedia. Include small thumbnail images of your selections. You MUST cite where you found the images and include it underneath each one. Works cited page must be in MLA format.
