Note: You must select a position and support the position with thought and analysis following the argumentative essay format found in ST 22-2.  Simply listing or defining the elements of thought and the problem-solving process will NOT successfully complete this assignment.

In addition, you must read Chapter 4 "Problem Solving" of FM 6-0 Commander and Staff Organization and Operations (May 2014).  In this chapter, you will learn about the Army Problem Solving Process.  

The process consists of seven steps: 
•    Gather information and knowledge.  
•    Identify the problem.
•    Develop criteria.
•    Generate possible solutions.
•    Analyze possible solutions.
•    Compare possible solutions.
•    Make and implement the decision.
  

The argumentative essay will be four pages typed, double-spaced pages.  The paper will use one-inch margins and a Times New Roman 12-pitch font.  Remember to use the third person and active voice in academic writing.  

Always cite the sources used to write your paper.  If something is not your original thought, you must cite your source using either footnotes or endnotes IAW the Turabian style of documentation; do not use parenthetical citations.  This includes direct quotations, paraphrases, summaries of the assigned readings, doctrinal references, or outside sources.

•    Readings or references provided with the C100 online lessons.
•    Student Text 22-2 Leader Communication (October 2013).
•    A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations (8th Edition) by Kate L. Turabian.   

Specifically, ST 22-2 can help you with the following.  
•    Chapter 1 review critical thinking, creative thinking, decision making, and problem-solving.  
•    Chapter 2 discusses substance, organization, style, and correctness; the writing process; and documenting sources.
•    Chapter 3 discusses academic ethics and plagiarism.    

To complete this requirement, you must submit the essay and the associated 1009w Writing Evaluation Form.  If you do not complete the student self-assessment on the 1009w Form, your grader will deduct 5 points from your final score.
